The Osteopathic Difference: Health and Wellness
Osteopathic physicians understand how all of the body's systems are interconnected, and how each one
affects the other systems of the body. This approach focuses special attention on the musculoskeletal
system, which both reflects and influences the condition of all other body systems.

The core of the osteopathic approach is to treat the whole person and not just the symptoms.  A Doctor of
Osteopathy (D.O.) assesses your overall health including home, work, and family life.  When making a
diagnosis, Dr. Howard considers all factors influencing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
She also focuses on preventive healthcare to assist you in avoiding disease, illness, and future injury.

“The body is capable of  healing  itself,  even  though  it must constantly struggle with physical, emotional,
chemical, and nutritional stressors.  My job is to listen carefully to the patient,  watch  how  the  body
responds  and  encourage  the  body  to  achieve optimum wellness.”
Cheryl L. Howard, Doctor of Osteopathy

Osteopathic medicine is a philosophy, a science, and an art. Its philosophy embraces the concept of unity of
body, structure, and function in health and disease. Its science includes the clinical, physical, and biological
sciences related to the maintenance of health and the prevention, cure, and alleviation of disease. Its art is
the application of the philosophy and the science in the practice of osteopathic medicine and surgery
in all its branches and specialties.

Health is based on the natural capacity of the human organism to resist and combat noxious influences in the
environment and to compensate for their effects, and to meet with adequate reserve the usual stresses of
daily life and the occasional severe stresses brought about by extreme environmental factors and activities.

Disease begins when this natural capacity is reduced, or when it is overcome by unhealthy influences.

Four Key Principles of Osteopathic Medicine are:

I.

III.
IV.

Dr. Howard uses her background in Family and Emergency medicine to treat a wide array of
health issues.

The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of
body unit, self-regulation, and  the  interrelationship of structure and function.
